3 Paris Cathedrals: A Must-Visit for Art Enthusiasts

Paris Travel Essentials! 3 Must-Visit Cathedrals for Art Enthusiasts
When you think of Paris, most people think of famous tourist attractions like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum.
However, if you're a true art aficionado, a cathedral tour is a must. Paris is home to a wealth of artistically stunning cathedrals, from medieval Gothic architecture to ornate stained glass. Here are three must-sees for travelers.

Notre Dame Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris)

A symbol of Paris and one of the most famous cathedrals in the world, this cathedral is located in the heart of the Île de la Cité. It is considered a masterpiece of 12th-century Gothic architecture, and its stained-glass rose window is a must-see. Also, don't miss the Emmanuel bell, also known as "Quasimodo's bell."
Notre Dame Cathedral is also famous for Victor Hugo's novel Notre Dame de Paris and the musical of the same name. Entering the cathedral feels like walking through the setting of the story.
Although severely damaged by a massive fire in 2019, it was finally restored and reopened in December 2024. Now open to the public, it's a must-see attraction on any Parisian itinerary.

Sainte-Chapelle

Sainte-Chapelle is renowned for its stained glass windows, earning it the nickname "Cathedral of Light." Fifteen 15-meter-tall stained-glass windows depict 1,113 scenes from the Bible, resembling a history book made of light. Step inside and you'll be overwhelmed by the mystical atmosphere, bathed in blue and red light.
Although not large, this place is extremely popular, so online reservations are essential. Security is strict, and sharp objects and large bags are not permitted, so be sure to check your belongings before visiting.

Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur

Perched atop Montmartre Hill, the Sacré-Cœur Basilica is notable for its striking white dome, visible from anywhere in Paris. Built in the Byzantine Romanesque style, it was built to boost national morale after the Franco-Prussian Wars. Inside, the cathedral boasts the world's largest mosaic ceiling, while outside, bronze statues of Joan of Arc and Louis IX stand.
The Dome Observatory is a must-see, in particular. While a bit challenging, the climb up the stairs rewards you with a 360-degree panoramic view of Paris, and the view alone is worth the climb. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes!

The cathedral is nice, but what if you're curious about the art museum?
